Sophie Harburg
Sophie practices predominantly in criminal and regulatory law. She appears for both the prosecution and defence in trials, sentences and applications before the Supreme and District Courts, and in appeals. She also appears in matters before the Magistrates and Industrial Magistrates Courts. Sophie acts for a variety of State and Commonwealth Government departments and agencies in criminal and regulatory matters, and related civil litigation. She has a particular interest in work health and safety matters, maritime and marine offences, and quasi-criminal matters.
Sophie was called to the Bar in 2018. She was admitted as a lawyer in 2014.
Prior to commencing at the private Bar, Sophie was a Federal Prosecutor with the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. She prosecuted a variety of criminal offences in both the Brisbane and Townsville offices, and appeared in the Supreme, District and Magistrates Courts throughout Queensland. She also worked for a year as an Associate to a District Court Judge, prior to her admission as a lawyer.
Sophie holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland. She also holds a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the Australian National University.
Sophie volunteers at Caxton Legal Centre, and is a member of the Criminal Law Committee of the Bar Association. She is also a member of Queensland Young Lawyers, the Women Lawyers Association of Queensland, and the Family Law Practitioners Association.
